Benchmark for Reliable, Affirming and Inclusive Neurodivergent Systems
The Standard for Neuro-Inclusive AI
With the rapid rise of chat-based AI agents, digital therapists, workplace assistants, and adaptive tutors, these technologies are shaping nearly every part of society. Yet without clear standards or oversight, AI risks reinforcing bias and misunderstanding. This puts neurodivergent people at greater risk of exclusion and harm. The choices we make now will shape access, opportunity, and inclusion for generations to come.
BRAINS sets the benchmark by certifying AI that is reliable, bias free, and truly inclusive for Autistic, ADHD, and all neurodivergent users.
Current stats are unacceptable...
AI bias threatens to make things worse
Neurodivergent people already face huge barriers in education, work, and daily life. Now, AI risks amplifying those challenges, locking millions out of jobs, support, and even basic dignity.
Without clear standards for inclusion, AI technology reinforces these biases at scale.
20%
of the world's population is neurodivergent
8x
the unemployment rate of neurotypical people
4/10
autistic students complete higher education
70%
of autistic adults have a mental health condition
Objectives of BRAINS

Community Inclusive Development
We engage with ND experts, clinicians, ND community groups to ensure a robust and inclusive, data driven and community validated approach to the assessment process.

Construct a Reproducible Testbed
Leveraging scenarios derived from real ND experiences across therapy, coaching, education and employment.

Define Metrics
To support and establish a Global Standard, qualitatively and quantitatively for reliability, affirmation and inclusion.

Build Leaderboards
BRAINS certification is there to incentivise industry
uptake and inform users and community groups.

Establish a Global Standard
Supporting the future of the ND community and how AI will be implemented, leveraged and evolved over generations.
Sustainability
Built for an Evolving Future
A reproducible testbed ensures that BRAINS isn’t just a one-time solution, but a living, evolving, open standard. By continuously testing AI tools in real-world neurodivergent scenarios, we keep benchmarks relevant and up to date—so inclusion, accessibility, and trust are built to last.
Community-informed framework
BRAINS assess AI tools for their reliability, affirming language, and inclusivity across six key domains.
- Communication Adaptability
- Bias and Stereotype Resistance
- Task Effectiveness for ND Outcomes
- Personalisation & user control
- Development Transparency
Built by neurodivergent minds, for neurodivergent people.

Frequently Asked Questions
BRAINS (Benchmark for Reliable, Affirming and Inclusive Neurodivergent Systems) is a global standard designed to assess whether AI systems are truly reliable, affirming, and inclusive for neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. Unlike existing AI benchmarks, BRAINS directly addresses the unique needs and communication styles of neurodivergent users, helping to ensure AI tools are safer, more accessible, and fair for everyone.
BRAINS certification gives confidence to a wide range of people and organizations. This includes neurodivergent individuals and their families, schools, employers, government agencies, and AI developers. By meeting BRAINS standards, AI tools can better support user safety, increase trust, and open up more opportunities for neurodivergent communities across education, work, and everyday life.
Without BRAINS and similar standards, AI systems risk excluding or misrepresenting neurodivergent people. This can lead to unfair hiring practices, inaccessible education, harmful stereotypes, and mental health impacts. Setting clear benchmarks helps prevent discrimination and ensures that future AI systems are designed to work for all minds, not just the majority.
BRAINS is a non-profit organisation supported by a community of experts, professionals and academics. Through a collaborative approach, it is the goal of BRAINS to establish a globally accepted standard for inclusive AI technology.
The BRAINS Trust, was established to maintain awareness and develop research into the mental health impacts of AI technology and developing strategies on how to mitigate the increasing complex mental health challenges posed by AI tecchnologies.
It is not the intention of BRAINS to slow the evolution of AI technology, rather to embrace the opportunity to responsibly and ethically develop benchmarks to support the future generations of users, Neurodiverse or otherwise.
